Mist’s 2,000-Calorie Meal Plan Stops at 1,990—and “Free” Needs Context

Mist’s public web planner is still available and converts calorie and macronutrient targets into a one-day menu. The live Mist planner currently pairs a 2,000-calorie target and a 30% protein, 40% carbohydrate and 30% fat split with a menu displaying 1,990 calories, 141 grams of protein, 199 grams of carbohydrates and 75 grams of fat.
The more important qualification concerns the word “free.” The planner opens without an account or payment prompt, while Mist’s nutrition-tracker homepage separately describes its iOS app as free with no ads. The meal-planner page itself does not state a price, promise permanently free access or explain whether it belongs to the same offer.
What the meal planner actually produces
Mist generates a structured day of food rather than merely suggesting individual recipes. Its default output contains breakfast, lunch and dinner, with several items assigned to the morning and midday meals and a main dish with a vegetable side at dinner.
The example combines a nut-and-berry parfait, peanut butter–banana oatmeal bars and an orange for breakfast. Lunch consists of a whole-wheat vegetable wrap and black bean quesadillas, while dinner pairs lemon-baked cod with garlic broccoli and Parmesan.
That specificity is the tool’s clearest advantage. A calorie target is abstract, but a menu shows how the available energy might be distributed across recognizable meals. It can therefore solve the practical blank-page problem for someone who already knows the targets they intend to use.
The result is close to the target, not an exact match
The displayed menu ends 10 calories below the requested 2,000, a difference of 0.5%. Mist also describes its algorithm as seeking the best possible match for the selected criteria, which frames the output as an approximation rather than a precisely solved nutritional prescription.
The macronutrient totals illustrate the same point. An exact 30/40/30 allocation of a 2,000-calorie target would correspond to 600 calories from protein, 800 from carbohydrates and 600 from fat. Mist’s menu may still be useful when planning ordinary meals, but the displayed percentages should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every generated result will land exactly on each input.
This distinction matters when a small numerical difference has practical consequences. General meal planning can tolerate modest variation, whereas a medically managed diet or a tightly controlled athletic programme may depend on nutrients, ingredients and serving quantities that are not captured by the three headline macros.
Mist does not calculate an individual’s nutritional needs
The visible workflow begins with targets supplied through the planner; it does not establish that those targets are suitable for the person using it. Calorie and nutrient requirements can differ with age, body size, activity and health circumstances, so a polished menu does not validate the assumptions entered at the start.
The output also does not present a complete nutritional assessment. Its summary covers calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat, but does not display a comprehensive account of fibre, sodium, free sugars, saturated and trans fats, vitamins or minerals. Allergies, intolerances, cultural requirements and ingredient availability likewise require separate consideration.
This is a meaningful boundary rather than a minor missing feature. Two daily menus can carry similar calorie and macro totals while differing considerably in food variety, micronutrient content and the types of carbohydrate or fat they contain.
Matching macros does not establish a balanced diet
World Health Organization guidance identifies adequacy, balance, moderation and diversity as the four foundations of a healthy diet. It also explains that the appropriate composition varies with individual characteristics, physical activity, cultural context and locally available foods.
Mist addresses only part of that framework. Its generator can assemble foods around an energy and macronutrient request, but the visible totals do not establish micronutrient adequacy, moderation of components such as sodium and free sugars, or sufficient diversity across a longer period.
A single generated day also cannot reveal whether someone’s broader eating pattern is varied. Repeatedly obtaining a numerically close menu would not by itself show that the diet remains suitable across a week or accommodates changing activity and health needs.
Where Mist is useful—and where it is not
Mist is best understood as a menu-drafting tool for people who already have appropriate calorie and macro targets. It turns those numbers into a coherent set of meals and exposes the total for comparison, making its role narrower and clearer than that of a dietitian or clinical nutrition service.
Its limitations become more important when food choices require medical supervision or strict ingredient control. The planner does not visibly assess a diagnosis, medication, allergy risk or nutrients outside its summary, and its near-match algorithm should not be treated as an assurance of clinical precision.
The current verdict is therefore mixed but practical: Mist’s web planner remains accessible and produces a detailed daily menu close to its default calorie target. What has not been established is that the standalone planner will remain free, or that matching its displayed calories and macros makes the result nutritionally complete for a particular person.
