ChatGPT Crashes If You Mention the Name "David Mayer"

Hello!
David Who?
Netizens were baffled to find that OpenAI’s ChatGPT refused to acknowledge the existence of the name “David Mayer.”
Ask the chatbot about the name and it gives a puzzling reply: “I’m unable to produce a response.” The chat then abruptly ends, forcing users to open a new window to continue.

The incident highlights how little is known about the inner workings of large language models, the data they were trained on, and the safety limits imposed by their developers.
AI chatbots have already demonstrated a range of unpredictable behaviors, from hallucinating facts and failing at basic tasks to occasionally encouraging risky actions. Getting stuck on a simple name is far from the most unusual issue observed so far.

While waiting for an official statement from OpenAI — Quasa has reached out for comment — users on social media have been actively investigating the bug.
AI investor Justine Moore identified at least six additional names that trigger a similar response. Several belong to individuals who submitted GDPR “right to be forgotten” requests in the EU, suggesting the behavior may be linked to privacy-related data removal efforts.
Other users have speculated that the name “David Mayer” could be blocked because of its use as an alias by a Chechen ISIS member.

One user even changed their display name to “David Mayer” inside ChatGPT, after which the model refused to acknowledge the new name.
Whether the block stems from OpenAI’s privacy guardrails, a legal request, or another undisclosed reason remains unclear. The episode once again shows how much of a black box ChatGPT remains and serves as a reminder not to take AI answers at face value.
