Cash App's Magic Wand: Now You Can Pay by Waving a Wand in the US

In a move that blends fintech innovation with pure whimsy, Cash App has launched Cash App Tags — a new line of NFC-enabled physical payment accessories. The first release? A pearlescent magic wand that lets users tap to pay exactly like a regular debit card, but with a touch of magic.
Announced on June 4, 2026, by Thomas Templeton (Hardware Lead at Block, the company behind Cash App and founded by Jack Dorsey), the product line aims to take payments out of the wallet and make them visible, personal, and fun.
From Boring Card to Fashion Statement — and Now Beyond the Wallet
Cash App has long been known for its customizable physical debit cards (Visa), which users personalize with colors, materials, and designs. These cards turned a mundane object into something people actually wanted to show off.
But even the best-designed card stays hidden in a wallet. Cash App Tags solve that by creating standalone, NFC-powered accessories that live on your keys, bag, or clothing.
The inaugural product — the Cash App Wand — features a white star-shaped tip with a glowing green gemstone. It comes with a built-in keychain ring so you can clip it anywhere. It’s explicitly not a toy — it’s a financial instrument linked directly to your Cash App Card and balance.
How It Works
- Activation: Hold the wand to the back of your phone in the Cash App. It pairs instantly.
- Payment: Tap the wand at any contactless terminal (where you see the Visa tap-to-pay symbol). No phone or wallet needed.
- Control: Lock or unlock the wand independently via the app. Deactivate it instantly if lost or stolen.
- Security: Same protections as your Cash App Card — real-time alerts, 24/7 fraud monitoring, and zero liability for unauthorized charges.
- Compatibility: Works wherever tap-to-pay is accepted. Transactions appear in your Cash App activity feed and count toward your card’s limits and features (including Boosts, overdraft, etc.).
The wand costs $25 (plus tax) and was released in a limited run. It sold out quickly, with a waitlist now available in the app. It’s available to Cash App users aged 13+ (with parental sponsorship for younger teens).
Why a Wand? Gen Z Style Meets Practicality

Future Tags will expand throughout the summer, with more limited-edition designs expected. Thomas Templeton hinted at nearly limitless possibilities: “The number of form factors we can create is nearly limitless” — potentially including clothing, jewelry, or other wearable accessories.
A Physical Alternative to Apple Pay and Digital Wallets

In situations where pulling out your phone feels inconvenient (concerts, festivals, phone-free venues, or simply when your hands are full), waving a wand becomes both functional and theatrical.
As one observer noted, this might be one of the few genuine reasons to choose a physical payment method over Apple Pay or Google Wallet in 2026.

The Bigger Picture
Cash App Tags represent a clever evolution in payments: turning a necessary transaction into a moment of delight. By making payments “visible and social,” the company is betting that some users want more than invisible digital wallets or hidden plastic cards.

The wand may be the first of many. If the rest of the lineup lives up to the promise, we might soon be paying with everything from keychains to jewelry — all while leaving our phones and wallets in our pockets.
Cash App Tags are available now through the Cash App for eligible cardholders. More designs coming this summer.
Cash App Tags are financial instruments linked to your Cash App Card and are not toys. Available to users 13+. Use responsibly.
