The evidence concerns job transitions and employer-level remote eligibility—not the long-term effect of spending a particular number of days working from home.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>What the 48-million-transition study compared\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>The May 2026 \u003Ca href=\"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2605.01268\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">working paper by Yunhan Zheng and Jinhua Zhao\u003C/a> analyzes approximately 48 million US job entries from 2020 through 2024, including about one million entries into remote-eligible roles, and estimates an additional 4.13% in wage growth, a 2.05-percentage-point increase in upward seniority moves and a 1.95-percentage-point increase in cross-metropolitan job changes relative to weighted on-site transitions.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>The researchers combined career histories derived from public professional profiles with employer vacancy data. A destination job was classified as remote-eligible when most matched postings for the employer, occupation, location and hiring period indicated a remote or hybrid arrangement. On-site transitions were then reweighted to resemble remote-eligible transitions on observed characteristics including prior wages, seniority, occupation, industry, employer attributes, metropolitan area and entry year.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>These estimates describe differences between groups at the point of changing jobs. The wage figure is additional growth relative to the previous job, not a permanent remote-work salary premium. Likewise, the seniority result is an average difference in the likelihood of entering a higher-ranked role—not the probability that an individual will later be promoted.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>The largest gains appeared where options were thinnest\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>The average masks substantial variation. Workers in the lowest prior-wage tercile had an estimated 14.6% wage increase relative to their previous jobs, more than three times the corresponding gains in the middle and upper terciles. Positive wage associations appeared across the distribution, but the advantage was absent among engineers.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Geography showed a similar gradient. The estimated wage advantage was greatest among workers whose previous jobs were in metropolitan areas with the lowest concentrations of high-tech employment. Cross-metropolitan job changes responded most strongly in lower-rent labor markets, while wage and seniority associations were stronger in industries where remote work was less common.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>That pattern supports the title’s central claim: remote eligibility appears most consequential when it opens employers or career ladders that are scarce locally. It does not mean every person outside a technology hub benefits equally, or that workers already in opportunity-rich markets receive no benefit.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>Geographic mobility is not the same as moving home\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>A cross-metropolitan job change records a difference between the locations attached to consecutive jobs. It does not show whether the worker relocated, remained at home while joining a distant employer or entered a hybrid arrangement involving travel.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>This distinction matters because \u003Ca href=\"https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/promoting-better-career-choices-for-longer-working-lives_1ef9a0d0-en/full-report/component-8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OECD analysis of geographic and career mobility\u003C/a> explains that fully remote work can allow someone to live in one region while holding a job elsewhere, whereas hybrid arrangements remain geographically constrained. A remote label therefore says little by itself about residency rules, required office attendance, time-zone limits or location-based pay.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>A second study supports the access mechanism\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>A separate \u003Ca href=\"https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=6276658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study of French remote-work agreements\u003C/a> uses administrative data and plant-level policy variation from 2014–2017 and finds moderate wage increases, longer work-home distances and upward occupational movement, particularly among workers changing to plants that had also adopted remote work.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>The French evidence covers a different country, period and institutional setting, so it is not a replication of the US estimates. It nevertheless supports the mechanism that access to remote work can reduce search constraints and make more distant jobs feasible. Neither paper establishes a single wage premium that travels unchanged across occupations, employers or national labor markets.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>What the evidence does not establish\u003C/h2>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>The US estimates are observational.\u003C/strong> Weighting and within-person checks make the compared transitions more similar on measured characteristics, but they cannot eliminate every unmeasured difference or prove that remote eligibility caused the outcomes.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Occupation changes remain a complication.\u003C/strong> Occupational upgrading was the largest measured contributor to the wage association. Results were similar for same-occupation switches, but simultaneous movement into better-paid, more remote-feasible work cannot be ruled out completely.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Eligibility is not actual working practice.\u003C/strong> Remote status was inferred from employer postings near the hiring date. The data do not reveal how often each entrant subsequently worked remotely, how long the arrangement lasted or whether a hybrid policy later became more office-based.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Wages and seniority are modeled measures.\u003C/strong> Salaries were predicted from occupation, seniority, employer and country characteristics rather than observed directly from paychecks. Seniority was derived from standardized job-title levels, with additional checks adjusting for employer size.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Long-term organizational effects remain outside the data.\u003C/strong> Mentorship, informal networks, knowledge transfer and later internal promotions were not directly observed, and the findings may not generalize beyond the post-2020 US labor market.\u003C/li>\u003C/ul>\u003Ch2>How to evaluate a remote offer\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>Remote eligibility is most valuable when it changes the opportunity set: a stronger role, employer or labor market becomes accessible without an otherwise impractical move or commute. The label itself is not evidence of a career ladder.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Compare the offer with your current position and realistic on-site alternatives on four points: total compensation and location-based pay rules; the role’s actual authority and responsibilities; documented promotion criteria and access to visible work; and the practical boundaries of remote or hybrid status.
