"We can see pieces of the electron in motion."\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>Incremental Improvement\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\n\n\u003Cp>Previous electron microscopes have gotten close to achieving this feat, reaching speeds of several attoseconds instead of just one.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>Still, that difference is an eternity at the subatomic level: without a higher "temporal resolution," scientists weren't able to observe some of the subtleties of an electron's various interactions as they happened.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>In photography terms, the microscopes simply didn't have a quick enough shutter speed, or a high enough framerate.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>Pulse-Pounding\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cpicture class=\"image-align-left\">\u003Csource srcset=\"https://cdn.quasa.io/photos/photo/16_11/atto.webp\" type=\"image/webp\">\u003Cimg alt=\"New Microscope So Absurdly Fast It Can See Electrons In Motion\" class=\"image-align-left\" height=\"200\" src=\"https://cdn.quasa.io/photos/photo/16_11/atto.jpg\" width=\"300\" />\u003C/picture>To improve on those efforts, the Arizona researchers designed their "attomicroscope" to split a laser into an electron pulse and two light pulses.
