"Plaintiffs do not know how this hallucination wound up in Hancock’s declaration, but it calls the entire document into question."\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>And it's not just Franson's lawyers. UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh also discovered a different cited study titled "Deepfakes and the Illusion of Authenticity: Cognitive Processes Behind Misinformation Acceptance," which also doesn't appear to exist.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>It's a troubling turn in an otherwise meaningful effort to keep AI deepfakes from swaying an election, something that has become a very real risk given steady advancements in the \u003Ca href=\"https://quasa.io/media/tech-companies-furious-at-new-law-that-would-hold-them-accountable-when-their-ai-does-bad-stuff\">tech\u003C/a>.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cpicture class=\"image-align-left\">\u003Csource srcset=\"https://cdn.quasa.io/photos/photo/25_11/law4.webp\" type=\"image/webp\">\u003Cimg alt=\"Lawyer Submits Anti-AI Document That Appears to Have Been Created Using AI\" class=\"image-align-left\" height=\"169\" src=\"https://cdn.quasa.io/photos/photo/25_11/law4.jpg\" width=\"300\" />\u003C/picture>It also highlights a recurring trend: lawyers keep getting caught using tools like \u003Ca href=\"https://quasa.io/media/you-can-insert-false-memories-into-chatgpt-researcher-finds\">ChatGPT \u003C/a>when they bungle up facts. Last year, New York City-based \u003Ca href=\"https://quasa.io/media/what-is-personal-injury-lawyer-seo\">lawyer \u003C/a>Steven Schwartz was caught using \u003Ca href=\"https://quasa.io/media/chatgpt-artificial-intelligence-causes-a-sensation-with-amazingly-good-answers\">ChatGPT \u003C/a>to help him write up a document.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>A different Colorado-based lawyer named Zacharia Crabill, who was also caught red-handed, was fired from his job in November for the same offense.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>Crabill, however, dug in his heels.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>"There’s no point in being a naysayer," he told the Washington Post of the firing, "or being against something that is invariably going to become the way of the
