Before trading, compare the price you can actually execute—the ask when buying or the bid when selling—with a reasonably current measure of portfolio value.

The displayed premium or discount is only part of that comparison. You also need the bid-ask spread, matching timestamps and the trading hours of the underlying assets; otherwise, an apparent gap may combine a genuine execution cost with stale or asynchronous prices.

Why market price and NAV can differ

NAV per share equals an ETF’s assets minus its liabilities, divided by shares outstanding. A fund calculates NAV every business day, whereas its exchange price can change throughout the trading session as investors place orders.

The SEC’s ETF investor bulletin explains that retail investors trade at market prices, while authorized participants can create or redeem large blocks of ETF shares with the fund. Arbitrage through that creation-redemption mechanism generally pulls the exchange price toward portfolio value, but it does not require an exact match at every moment.

Temporary differences can reflect supply and demand, uncertainty about component prices, the cost of trading or hedging the underlying basket, limited liquidity, volatility or an interruption affecting creations and redemptions. A small premium or discount is therefore not, by itself, evidence that an ETF is malfunctioning.

How to calculate the percentage gap
<picture></picture>
Use a market price and NAV measured at the same valuation point. The formula is (market price − NAV) ÷ NAV × 100. A positive result is a premium; a negative result is a discount.

For a published example, the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF fund page listed a $742.36 closing price and $742.27 NAV for July 24, 2026, together with a 0.01% premium and a 0.01% 30-day median bid-ask spread. Using those values, ($742.36 − $742.27) ÷ $742.27 × 100 equals approximately 0.012%, which rounds to 0.01%.

This dated calculation demonstrates the method; it is not a live quote. During a later session, the exchange price may have changed while the most recently published NAV still represents the preceding valuation point.

For an intraday check, calculate the quote midpoint as (bid + ask) ÷ 2 and compare that with the best available estimate of portfolio value. The midpoint is usually more informative than the last trade, which may be old or may have occurred near one side of the spread.

The spread and premium measure different effects

A premium or discount compares an ETF price with portfolio value. The spread measures the distance between the highest current bid and the lowest current ask. Both can affect execution, so neither should be treated as the complete trading cost.

Consider a conditional example in which estimated NAV is $100, the bid is $100.15 and the ask is $100.25. The midpoint is $100.20, a 0.20% premium to NAV, while the full $0.10 spread is approximately 0.10% of the midpoint.

If you buy 100 shares at the $100.25 ask, you pay $10,025 for a portfolio value of $10,000. The $25 difference consists of $20 from the midpoint premium and $5 from crossing half the spread. Any commission, fee or market movement during execution would be additional.

Suppose NAV later remains $100, but the midpoint moves to a 0.20% discount, with a $99.75 bid and $99.85 ask. Selling 100 shares at the bid returns $9,975. The hypothetical $50 round-trip shortfall consists of $40 from buying at a midpoint premium and selling at a midpoint discount, plus $10 from crossing half the spread twice. In a real trade, you must separate these execution effects from any change in NAV during the holding period.

Why a closing premium is not a live trading signal

A fund screen commonly shows the previous closing market price, end-of-day NAV and the resulting premium or discount. That snapshot does not reveal the premium contained in the ask available when you buy during the next session.

An intraday indicative value—sometimes labeled IIV or IOPV—may estimate portfolio value while the ETF trades. It is not the official NAV, an executable price or a guarantee of fair value. Its usefulness depends on the freshness of component prices, currency inputs, valuation methodology and update frequency.

Treat an indicative value as a diagnostic reference. If the ETF midpoint appears far from it, check both timestamps and the status of the underlying markets before interpreting the difference. The estimate may be more informative for actively traded domestic shares than for foreign securities, bonds or other assets whose current value is harder to observe.

How different market hours create apparent gaps
<picture></picture>
An apparent premium can reflect two valuation clocks. A U.S.-listed international ETF may continue trading after exchanges for many of its holdings have closed. New information can move the ETF’s U.S. price while the last local-market quotes remain unchanged.

Vanguard’s premiums-and-discounts analysis notes that a published end-of-day gap is only a closing snapshot and that international ETF pricing is harder when underlying markets are closed during U.S. trading hours. In such cases, the ETF may be incorporating newer information than the component prices used in the comparison.

When the foreign exchanges reopen, local security prices may catch up with information already reflected by the ETF. The previously displayed premium can then shrink without a corresponding fall in the ETF’s market price.

A related issue arises in bond ETFs. Many bonds do not trade continuously, so NAV may use evaluated prices, dealer information or earlier transactions while the ETF quote responds to changing rates and credit conditions. This does not make every large difference harmless; it means the timing and methodology of the reference value must be understood first.

When a gap deserves closer scrutiny

A persistent, executable and unusual gap matters more than one closing observation. Scrutiny is particularly useful when the ETF and its underlying assets are trading simultaneously under otherwise normal conditions.

The midpoint is far from a fresh portfolio estimate. This comparison is more useful than one based on an old last trade or the previous day’s NAV.

The spread is also unusually wide. Market makers may be pricing valuation uncertainty, hedging difficulty or limited liquidity into both sides of the quote.

The difference persists during overlapping hours. That makes asynchronous market closes a less complete explanation.

Comparable funds do not show a similar pattern. The cause may be specific to the ETF’s portfolio, basket, liquidity or operations.

Creation or redemption may be impaired. Trading halts, market holidays, capital controls or unavailable underlying securities can weaken arbitrage.

Historical behavior provides context, but the average gap alone can mislead. A modest, stable premium may create less round-trip uncertainty than a fund that frequently switches between premiums and discounts. The damaging path is buying at a substantial premium and later selling at a substantial discount, especially if you cross a wide spread on both transactions.

How to reduce avoidable execution costs

Prefer periods when price discovery is strong and the principal underlying markets are open. For an ETF holding U.S. shares, that generally means regular exchange hours while those shares are actively trading. For an international fund, determine whether meaningful overlap with its main markets exists.

Do not assume the opening or closing quote is representative. Near the open, market makers may still be processing overnight information and establishing reliable component prices; near the close, order imbalances can affect quotes. There is no universally safe minute, so evaluate the current spread and available size.

A limit order sets the highest price you will pay or the lowest price you will accept, although it does not guarantee execution. A market order prioritizes execution and may fill at several price levels, creating greater uncertainty when the spread is wide, displayed size is small or prices are moving quickly.

For a large order, compare its size with displayed liquidity, but do not rely on the ETF’s exchange volume alone. Market makers also consider the liquidity and hedging cost of the underlying basket. A broker’s ETF trading desk may be able to assess executable liquidity when an order is material relative to normal activity.

Pre-trade verification checklist

Confirm the ticker, fund name, listing exchange and trading currency.

Record the live bid, ask, midpoint, displayed size and timestamp instead of relying on the last trade.

Find the latest official NAV and note its valuation date and time.

Check any intraday indicative value, including its timestamp and update frequency, while treating it as an estimate.

Determine whether the principal markets for the underlying assets are open, closed or observing a holiday.

Calculate the midpoint premium or discount, then calculate the executable difference using the ask for a purchase or bid for a sale.

Compare the current spread with the fund’s published median spread and its recent range.

Check for trading halts, exceptional volatility or fund notices affecting valuation, creations or redemptions.

Select the order type deliberately and set any limit according to the most you will pay or least you will accept.

After execution, compare the fill with the contemporaneous midpoint to assess execution quality.

Base the decision on the executable price

For a buyer, the relevant comparison is the ask against a reasonably current estimate of portfolio value; for a seller, it is the bid. Aligning the timestamps, checking the spread and identifying whether underlying markets are open turns a historical statistic into a practical trading check.

If you cannot align the inputs with reasonable confidence, waiting is a valid execution decision.
