Musk claimed that, in a few months, Colossus will "double" in size to 200,000 AI chips, which will include 50,000 H200 GPUs, a newer version that Nvidia says will have nearly twice the memory capacity as its predecessor, and 40 percent more bandwidth.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>Fast Learners\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\n\n\u003Cp>Musk only founded xAI last summer, its premier product being Grok, a foul-mouthed AI chatbot integrated into X-formerly-Twitter.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cpicture class=\"image-align-left\">\u003Csource srcset=\"https://cdn.quasa.io/photos/foto-19/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm-11.webp\" type=\"image/webp\">\u003Cimg alt=\"Elon Musk Claims He Just Activated the World's Most Powerful AI Supercomputer\" class=\"image-align-left\" height=\"169\" src=\"https://cdn.quasa.io/photos/foto-19/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm-11.jpeg\" width=\"300\" />\u003C/picture>That Musk's company has managed to match up to the hardware capabilities of tech leaders who've had a years-long head start, such as bitter rivals \u003Ca href=\"https://quasa.io/media/openai-s-new-strawberry-ai-is-still-making-idiotic-mistakes\">OpenA\u003C/a>I and its backers Microsoft, is impressive — assuming that Musk's penchant for exaggeration isn't at work once again.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>As \u003Cem>Fortune \u003C/em>notes, Nvidia sees Musk as one of its best customers, since he'd already bought tens of thousands of GPUs for Tesla — about $3 to $4 billion worth — before branching out with xAI.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>Some of those chips, originally intended to train Tesla's Full Self-Driving system, would be used to train an early version of Grok.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>To secure this latest wealth of 100,000 H100 GPUs, it's likely that Musk had to spend billions more, with each AI chip fetching a price of around $40,000. Luckily for him, xAI raised around $6 billion in a May fundraiser, thanks to the backing of notable tech VC firms including Andreessen Horowitz.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>Claim to the Throne\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\n\n\u003Cp>The monstrous supercomputer's launch, however, was preceded by controversy. It's not likely that other AI leaders, like \u003Ca href=\"https://quasa.io/media/openai-s-strawberry-thought-process-sometimes-shows-it-scheming-to-trick-users\">OpenAI\u003C/a>, Microsoft, Google, and Meta, will rest on their laurels, some of whom already possess hundreds of thousands of GPUs of their own.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>Microsoft, for example, reportedly aims to amass 1.8 million AI chips by the end of the year (though this number sounds highly optimistic, if not infeasible).\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>In January, Mark Zuckerberg signaled that Meta intends to buy an additional 350,000 Nvidia H100s by the same deadline.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>For now, though, Colossus remains a singular statement of raw computing power.
