Every partial phase requires a compliant solar viewer, while cameras, binoculars and telescopes need a solar filter over the front of the optics; after dark, remove the solar equipment and observe the broad sky from a dark site.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>Match the eclipse plan to your location\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/total-solar-eclipse-on-august-12-2026/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA’s eclipse map and local timings\u003C/a> show totality crossing northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain and a small corner of northwestern Portugal. A clear western horizon matters because the Sun is low and, in some places, sets before the partial phase has finished.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Smaller partial eclipse:\u003C/strong> Alaska, most of Canada and parts of the northern contiguous US see a partial eclipse. It occurs in the morning in Alaska and northern Canada, around midday or afternoon farther south and east.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Outside the footprint:\u003C/strong> Skip direct solar observing, but retain the nighttime plan if the Perseid radiant is suitably placed and the sky becomes fully dark.\u003C/li>\u003C/ul>\u003Cp>Eclipse contacts vary continuously with position. Save the first partial contact, maximum eclipse, totality contacts where applicable, sunset and the final visible contact for your exact coordinates and local time zone. For a totality trip, check the horizon from the intended site before eclipse day: low cloud, haze, terrain or buildings can block a setting Sun even when the coordinates are inside the path.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>Keep solar filters on for every partial phase\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>A 90% or 99% partial eclipse is still a partial eclipse. The remaining sunlight is unsafe to view directly, ordinary sunglasses provide no protection, and clouds or haze do not make unfiltered viewing acceptable.\u003C/p>\u003Col>\u003Cli>Use eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer designed to comply with ISO 12312-2. The \u003Ca href=\"https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/space-astronomy/how-see-12-august-2026-partial-solar-eclipse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Royal Observatory Greenwich safety guidance\u003C/a> says to check for the standard marking and avoid filters with scratched or creased lenses; also reject viewers that are torn, punctured or separating from their frames.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Place the viewer over your eyes before turning toward the Sun. Turn away before removing it, and supervise children throughout the partial phases.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Never look through a camera, binoculars or telescope while wearing eclipse glasses. Magnifying optics concentrate sunlight and require their own purpose-made solar filter secured over the \u003Cstrong>front\u003C/strong> aperture.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Do not substitute sunglasses, photographic neutral-density filters, unverified film or an eyepiece-only filter for a front-mounted solar filter.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Outside the path of totality, keep eye protection on throughout the event. Inside the path, remove it only when the Sun’s bright face is completely covered and replace it as soon as any bright portion reappears.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>If no trustworthy viewer is available, use indirect projection. New moon on Aug. 12 removes moonlight interference, but the calendar warns that background activity may be below the often-quoted idealized rate.\u003C/p>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Iceland and UTC locations:\u003C/strong> 2–4 a.m. on Aug. 13.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>UK and Ireland:\u003C/strong> 3–5 a.m. BST or IST on Aug. 13.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Spain and Central Europe:\u003C/strong> 4–6 a.m. CEST on Aug. 13.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Eastern North America:\u003C/strong> 10 p.m.–midnight EDT on Aug. 12.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Central North America:\u003C/strong> 9–11 p.m. CDT on Aug. 12.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Mountain and Pacific time:\u003C/strong> 8–10 p.m. MDT and 7–9 p.m. PDT on Aug. 12. Part of that interval may precede full darkness, so continue observing later instead of treating the converted maximum as a deadline.\u003C/li>\u003C/ul>\u003Cp>Mid-northern latitudes are best placed, with the radiant reaching a useful elevation at roughly 10–11 p.m. local time and climbing later in the night. Most of the Southern Hemisphere and locations north of about 60° north are poorly placed, so an eclipse trip to far northern Greenland does not automatically provide a strong meteor view.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Choose an unobstructed dark site and look across a broad area of sky rather than directly at Perseus. Meteors can appear far from the radiant; nearby lamps, phone screens and a narrow field of view reduce what you notice.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>Build one itinerary with two independent sessions\u003C/h2>\u003Col>\u003Cli>Before travelling, save exact eclipse contacts and sunset for the daytime coordinates. Inspect eclipse viewers and front-mounted optical filters before packing them.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Reach the solar site early enough to check the western horizon and secure filtered equipment before pointing it toward the Sun. Plan any filter removal only if the site is unquestionably inside the path of totality.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>After the eclipse, allow time for food, rest and safe travel to the meteor site. The best eclipse horizon and the darkest nighttime location may not be the same place.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>At the dark site, minimise artificial light and stay through the locally useful part of the broad maximum. In Europe this means continuing into the morning of Aug. 13; in North America it means beginning on the evening of Aug. 12 and remaining after full darkness.\u003C/li>\u003C/ol>\u003Cp>The same date can support both observations, but the criteria are different: coordinates determine totality, while darkness, latitude, weather and sustained observing determine the Perseid experience. Keeping those decisions separate prevents a deep partial eclipse from being mistaken for safe totality and prevents a UTC conversion from sending you outside before the sky is
